9.1 Possessives

A genitive construction is one in which one noun phrase modifies another. The kinds available in TIAL are the possessives, the have-construction, and the of-construction.

Like the demonstratives, the possessives are used as determiners and pronouns (unlike the demonstratives, there are no e-forms). The interrogative possessive determiner kio "whose" (CQ.Pos) has already been mentioned; the possessive forms of the personal pronouns are as follows:

Table 7 - Personal Possessives

leo 3S.Pos 3rd person Singular loro 3P.Pos 3rd person Plural

oso mamo   "our mother"

9.2 Have-Construction

Other words lack special possessive forms, the possessive being constructed instead by placing the particle mo (Pos) after the noun or noun phrase. This is called the have-construction, since mo is a form of the defective verb ma "have". The have-construction is also used for "subjective genitives".

Janno mo libro   "John's book"

elo viro grando mo papo   "that big man's father"

ci vas gevida Tomaso mo gatto?
"Have y'all seen Tom's cat?."

9.3 Of-Construction

The of-construction is used for "objective genitives". The defective verb da (Gen) "belong to" is placed before the modifying phrase, the whole construction constituting a post-nominal modifier.

me valeja libro da elo damo.
"I'm going to read that woman's book."

9.4 Defective Verbs

The defective verbs in TIAL are very simple — they are (almost) all one-syllable a-forms (where a related form does exist, it's treated as a separate word).

9.5 Predicate Possession

Statements (or questions) of possession use the defective verb ma "have". Like other defective verbs, ma has no e-form and must take an object.

me ma deko libro.
"I have ten books."
