Aug04 Phonology and Orthography

Letters and Sounds

The tables show the relevent phonetic symbols (in IPA) with the corresponding orthographic (romanization) symbols. The 28 letters used are:
a ā æ c č e ē f h i ī k l m n o ō p r s š t ū v x y z ' — b d g j q w aren't used.

In the following tables, an asterisk * indicates that the letter is used for more than one sound.

Vowel Qualities

There are 4 short vowels, 6 long vowels, and no diphthongs.

• The allophone [ɾ] appears between vowels and the allophone [d] appears as any other onset; the allophone [r] appears in coda position.
• The allophone [ŋ] appears before k and fricatives; otherwise, the allophone [n] appears.

Phonotactics

• The onset is a single consonant; there are no onset clusters.
• The consonants y and v don't appear after consonants.

The following rhyme types appear:

light: -V
heavy: -Vː, -VC
extra-heavy: -VːC

• There are no coda clusters.
• The consonants y and v don't appear as codas.

Prosody

Stress is originally paradigm-based. Any extra-heavy syllables are stressed.
