Aug01 Usage

Person and Number Terminology

The following non-standard terminology is used here:

• The 3rd person excludes both the speaker and the addressees.
• The 2nd person refers to at least 1 addressee and may also include any number of other non-speakers.
• The 1st person refers to the speaker in the singular and in the plural includes at least 1 other non-addressee.
• The inclusive person refers to the speaker and at least 1 addressee; it may include any number of other entities.

Determiner Usage

The demonstratives are generally used in contrast to each other.

• The proximal has some connection with the speaker, whether spatially, in discourse, or other.
• The medial may have a similar connection with the addressee(s) or may just refer to a non-remote 3rd person.
• The distal is normally remote but may be used for things connected with a 3rd person.
• Both the medial and the distal may be used anaphorically.

The non-referential determiner indicates that the phrase has no referent (appearing typically in questions and negative statements), or none in particular. This contrasts with the indefinite determiner, for which there's always a specific referent.

Aspectuals

A stative verb specifies a state, possibly the result of an action, while an inchoative verb specifies an action or change of state, possibly in progress. A prospective verb specifies a state from which an action is expected to emerge.
