Letters and Sounds

The tables show the relevent phonetic symbols (in IPA) with the corresponding orthographic (romanization) symbols. Jaguar 5 is written phonemically using 29 letters:

Vowel Qualities

There are 8 oral vowels with 2 tones each and 5 nasal vowels. High tones are written using an acute accent while low tones are unmarked. Oral vowels are phonetically long unless followed by a coda consonant; nasal vowels are always phonetically long.

Phonotactics

• The onset is a single consonant.
• Allophones [β], [ð], and [ɣ] appear after an oral vowel.
• Allophones [m], [n], and [ŋ] appear after a nasal vowel and after [k'].
• Allophones [b], [d], and [g] appear otherwise.

• The allophone [z] appears before a voiced stop and the allophone [s] appears otherwise.
