C1 Phonology and Orthography

The tables show the relevent phonetic symbols (in QAPA) with the corresponding orthographic symbols.

Vowel Qualities

There are 5 written vowel phonemes, occurring both short and long. There's also an unwritten schwa, inserted between certain consonant pairs for easier pronunciation. There are 6 diphthongs (eu, ai, au, oi, ea, and oa).

Consonant Qualities

There are 21 written consonant phonemes, most of which can occur long as well as short. An unwritten glottal stop may occur as well.

Syllables and Prosody

Syllables are CV, CVV, and CVC. Syllables without written onsets may occur initially.

Stress is on the penult.

Phonotactics

Currently, any consonant can occur finally except b, d, g, j, ñ, and h.

The written language allows medial clusters consisting of any 2 different consonants. In many cases, however, schwas are inserted. The cases where schwa isn't inserted usually includes the following:
